VARSITY BASEBALL SWEEPS CHANTILLY ON CLARK HR; CLINCHES 3RD IN CONCORDE

Date Posted: May 14, 2010
Game Date: May 15, 2010

Score:
HORNETS: 4
CHANTILLY HIGH: 2

All season, the thought crossed the minds of Herndon players, coaches and parents when senior Alex Clark came to bat: "He's going to hit one out." Though he came close, Clark could not connect.

The wait is over. Clark saved his home run for the game the Hornets needed it most, a 2-run blast over the left field fence to beat Chantilly 4-2 in the eighth inning Saturday (May 15) that clinched third place in the Concorde District. The Chargers, who have owned Herndon since 2006, were the only team the Hornets swept this season.

"It was a fastball," said Clark, who will attend Ohio State University this fall. "I just hit it really good. It felt awesome."

Other Hornets stepped up in the biggest game of the year (to date). Senior Nick Impellizzeri shut out the Chargers over the last seven innings. Sophomore Matt Smith tied the game in the seventh inning with a base hit that scored junior Connor McNichol, who was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice by freshman Ky Parrott-Gilmore. And amazing senior Zach Reif, who saved his best high school season for his last, got a key hit in the eighth and scored on Clark's HR.

Chantilly took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first on Friday night before the game was called because of rain. The game resumed Saturday at dry McCullock Field. Neither team scored for five innings until Smith's RBI in the seventh made it 2-2, setting up Clark's HR.

Score by innings:
Herndon 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 2    4
Chantilly 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0    2

Chantilly, which was ranked in the Northern Region top 10 for the first several weeks of the season, dropped to fourth place.

In other Hornet baseball news, Impellizzeri and senior Paul Hvozdovic will be headed to Shepherd  (W.Va.) University to play baseball, family members announced.
