HORNETS: 3
WESTFIELD (SPONSOR NIGHT): 12

Westfield beat Herndon and Centreville defeated Chantilly on Friday (May 7) to stay tied atop the Concorde District and set up a possible battle between the Hornets and Chantilly for the third spot in the six-team league.

Westfield (6-2 district, 13-4 overall) became the only Concorde team to sweep the regular season series with the Hornets as the Bulldogs defeated the Hornets 12-3 at McCullock Field. Senior right handed pitcher Danny Thorpe improved to 9-0 with the victory, and junior left hander Aaron Hoover got the save in the seventh inning.

It was the first time Herndon (4-4 district, 10-5 overall) has lost back to back games this season and will test the Hornets' character heading into the final week of district play before the Concorde tournament begins May 18.

Herndon will host Robinson on Tuesday (May 11) and will close on the road against Chantilly Friday (May 14). Herndon and Chantilly have identical 4-4 records in the district although the Hornets beat the Chargers in their first meeting. Oakton (3-5) beat Robinson (2-6) in the other district game Friday. At stake in next week's games is a finish in the first division of the Concorde and one of the top seeds in the tournament.

Concorde standings
Centreville 6-2
Westfield 6-2*
Herndon 4-4
Chantilly 4-4
Oakton 3-5
Robinson 2-6
*Westfield has lost twice to Centreville

Herndon has beaten the other four Concorde teams at least once but could not find a solution for Westfield, the defending Concorde champion. In Friday's game, the Bulldogs simply hit the ball hard, tagging Herndon starter Nick Impellizzeri for seven straight hits in the fourth inning, including a three-run homer to senior Nick Colonna that made the score 6-1. Pinch-hitting sophomore Wade Arduini added another two-run home run in the seventh-- his first HR in high school. Westfield had 16 hits in the game to seven for the Hornets.

The game, played in front of large crowd on sponsor and youth night, started out promising for Herndon as Impellizzeri retired the first nine batters he faced. The Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when senior Daniel Shill doubled, took third on a wild pitch and scored on senior Alex Clark's single up the middle. Impellizzeri and Shill scored in the fifth inning on a double, triple and passed ball to make it 9-3. Shill relieved Impellizzeri after 4 1/3 innings and senior Matt Rhyne finished the last inning.  scfehr@gmail.com
