Fourth-ranked Centreville and all-Met pitcher Ryan Ashooh took control of the Concorde District race on Tuesday (May 4) with a dominating 10-0 victory over the visiting Herndon High School Hornets.
The Wildcats (5-2) are tied for first with Westfield (5-2), which beat Robinson (2-5) Tuesday, but Centreville has defeated the Bulldogs twice. Herndon (4-3) dropped into a second place tie with Chantilly (4-3) with three games remaining in the regular season. Chantilly beat last place Oakton (1-6) in the other district game.
The Wildcats unleashed lefthander Ashooh on the Hornets for the first time this season in an effort to avenge their 8-7 loss to Herndon on April 16. Ashooh, who has committed to the University of Virginia, struck out 10 Hornets, walked two and gave up one hit-- a single to senior Daniel Shill leading off the second inning. Ashooh then picked Shill off first base, a play that summed up the Hornets' frustration.

Ashooh's fastball clocked as high as 88 mph on the radar gun behind home plate. In his last start, April 27 against Robinson, Ashooh set a school record with 16 strikeouts in a 1-hit shutout of the Rams.
Nothing went right for the Hornets. Senior right hander Alex Clark gave up four runs in the first inning on four straight hits, capped by a 3-run home run to senior Cam Walter over the left field fence. Clark struck out senior Chris Mandell but injured his elbow and was forced to leave the game. Junior Dylan Garten (3 2/3 innings) and senior Matt Rhyne (1 inning) finished for the Hornets.
Walter singled home senior David DeLorimer for Centreville's 10th run in the bottom of the fifth inning, ending the game by mercy rule. It was Herndon's most lopsided loss of the season and the first time they were shut out since the first game of the year against Broad Run.
With four starters committed to play in college, Centreville is hoping 2010 is the Wildcats' year. In its 20 years of varsity baseball, Centreville has never won a district or regional final, and has not had a winning season since former Washington Redskins tight end Don Warren was the baseball coach in 2003. Chantilly and Centreville are the only teams in the Concorde District never to have won a Northern Region title.
Two of the four seniors committed to college ball were out of the lineup Tuesday-- Andy Viands and Chris Campbell.
Centreville, behind Ashooh, shut out McLean 1-0 in the first round of the Northern Region tournament a year ago. McLean is now the top-ranked team in the region, and Highlander players shout "Ash-ooh!" to psyche themselves up during workouts.
Herndon hosts Westfield at 6:30 p.m. Friday (May 7). The Hornets wrap up the regular season next week by hosting Robinson and traveling to Chantilly. scfehr@gmail.com
