Junior Dylan Garten hit and pitched Herndon High School to a 9-7
victory over South Lakes High School on Monday (April 12) as the
Hornets won the bragging rights game over their Reston rivals.

Freshman Ky Gilmore-Parrot also had his best game of the
season, going three for four, scoring twice and knocking in two runs.

Garten, relieving senior Alex Clark in the fourth inning with the game
tied 6-6, held the host Seahawks to one run before senior Nick
Impellizzeri returned to the mound with two out in the sixth inning to
close the game, the Hornets' third straight win over South Lakes. Garten
also broke up the 6-6 tie in the sixth inning with a double in the gap
between center and right field to score senior Jamie Kinney, who led
off the inning with a walk. Kinney also had a double and single and
scored twice in his best game so far in 2010.

The Hornets cruised to a 6-1 lead on Thursday (April 8) before the
game was postponed due to thunderstorms. When the game resumed Monday,
the Seahawks capitalized on a series of hit batsmen, walks and wild
pitches to score four times in the bottom of the third inning. But the
Hornets scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the
game away.

Unlike any other game on Herndon's schedule, the South Lakes rivalry
brings together players, coaches and parents from the bygone days of
Fox Mill park and Reston Little League. The game has particular
meaning for several coaches on both teams who taught many of the
Hornets and Seahawks how to play the game.

Dylan Garten's father, Craig Garten, coached six South Lakes and five
Herndon varsity players in little league. Marty Reif, whose son Zach
is on Herndon's varsity, coached nine South Lakes players as well as Matt
Fehr on Herndon's varsity. Tino Impellizzeri, a Reston and Herndon
little league coach, had many of the same Hornets and Seahawks on his teams. He
also coached the Seahawks' girls' softball team when his daughter was
there. On South Lakes' side of the field, Reston Little League coaches
John Forrest and Joe Beaulac watched their sons and many of their former players in the
game.

The connections are not limited to coaches. Herndon math teacher Janie Odlen saw her son, David Odlen, pitching for South Lakes Monday night.

With the victory, the Hornets have now won sixth straight as they are scheduled to open
Concorde District play Tuesday (April 13) at home against the Oakton Cougars. Rain is in the forecast, however.

Players to watch for Oakton include centerfielder Luke Willis and
third baseman Matt Chandler, who were all-district selections last
year. (Story by S. Fehr)
