HORNET DEFENSE SHINES IN 8-5 WIN AT BROAD RUN

HORNETS: 8
BROAD RUN HIGH: 5

The Herndon High School Hornets avenged their only loss of the season
Wednesday (April 7) with an 8-5 win over the Broad Run High School
Spartans that extended Herndon's winning streak to five games.

The game effectively  turned on a pair of double plays involving
Garten-McNichol-Clark and a pair of Matt Smith throws to catch two
runners stealing that prevented Broad Run scoring threats.

A neat statistic about the game probably went unnoticed by many of the
Herndon fans in the stands at Broad Run: When the Hornets failed to
score in the top of the fifth inning, it was the first time in 14
consecutive innings that Herndon had not scored, a streak dating back
to the Kenston game at Myrtle Beach. Remarkably, Wednesday night the
Hornets only had three hits (two by Alex Clark) but capitalized on Spartan errors, walks
and hit batsmen as well as aggressive baserunning to grab the win.

Senior Daniel Shill, who got one of the hits, pitched the Hornets to
the win, striking out seven batters over six innings. Junior Dylan
Garten struck out two Spartans in the seventh to preserve the win for
the Hornets, who face their rivals, the South Lakes Seahawks Thursday
(April 8) at South Lakes before beginning Concorde District play next
week. (Story by S. Fehr)
